Scrappy Saturday in Red

My Saturday is going to be very scrappy indeed! After I post this blog post to join Angela and the other Rainbow Scrapettes at Scrappy Saturday (come see all the delightful blocks and quilts at Angela’s So Scrappy blog), I’ll be heading off to a Quilts for Kids workshop. There we’ll spend three delightful hours stitching, gabbing and snacking. I’ve got eleven quilts to turn in! Naturally, we’ll be masked and socially distanced, but there is sure to be plenty of laughing and scrap sharing as well!

I was able, finally, to finish quilting the sailboat quilt that was giving my machine fits last week. First I had to rip out a lot of the quilting because of the poor tension. After a couple quick trips to the dealer to have them look at my machine, they adjusted the bobbin tension and that helped somewhat. It was still not what it should have been, but I got the quilt done. Then I trimmed and bound it. Here is this cutie pie quilt all finished.

It was quilted with swirls (what was I thinking?). The finished size is 42.5x50”.

Once I got past this quilt, my Bernina was back to purring along perfectly like her old self. The red scrap donation quilt was next.

With small loopy quilting, this finished up in no time at 42x45.5”. And finally I quilted the one I’m calling “red cats” because of the old maroon-red fabric in it. Sorta looks like the Nineties threw up all over it.  Actually, I love this little quilt!

And look at the wild backing! It was sent to me for QFK by my friend Sally.

It was good to get those three little quilts done early in the week so I could take them to the QFKids workshop today. Anyway, then it was time to get back to the red scraps.

I made two more elephant blocks, for a total of six this month.

And two Antique Tile blocks (12.5”, unfinished size)..

That’s all the finished blocks this week, but I’ve been working with my crumbs too. I divided them up into bright reds and maroons (cranberry, mahogany, etc). I made 12 crumb blocks of each color set measuring 6.5” each. They’ll be sewn into two placemats of each color, but that will be unveiled next week. I also made crumb tumblers and cut some regular fabric tumblers and will sew up the first two rows of a rainbow tumbler quilt. That, too, will be for next week.

I still have a lot (a LOT) of red scraps and am debating as to whether or not I want to keep the Bear Paw blocks in my RSC lineup, or whether I want to spend next week working on a personal red quilt that I started last August, my Ribbons quilt.

Maybe I can do both? HA! There’s also the Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) that I (and many others) are participating in. The first round was given to us: curves. You can see all the wonderful progress here. This is my block, with the curves added in the form of drunkard’s path blocks on the top and bottom. I’m going to build this as a rectangular quilt.

So…. Decisions, decisions. But right now I’m deciding I’d better get my rear in gear and get going to the QFK workshop!

  1. Enjoy the sewing circle day! Are you going to follow up on last year's "creature" names for your monthly scrap/crumb combos? Red ribbons looks interesting. Do you strive for "no two same fabrics touching" or just let 'em fall where they may? (I've come to the conclusion that if I notice the adjacency while piecing I'll try to swap it out but if I don't notice it I'll leave it. Pretty much.)

  2. The sailboat quilt turned out really cute. (even though it gave you fits!) Red Cats quilt is great! Suddenly I seem to like red a lot!
I have some fabric you might want for the Quilts for Kids. Its original intended use was for "I Spy" Quilts, but I don't see myself doing that now. If you want it I am willing to send it along.

  3. I love the sail boats! I really need to make one of those for my nephew.....I have been trying to sew at least 3-4 birds from that bird quilt you did a few years ago but its not going well, ergh! I need to stream line it somehow but there are just enough moving parts, that make it difficult to do. motivation is my biggest bug-a-boo so far.

  4. So many lovely things to look at. Love the little Sail Boats-just so special. The other two finishes are great too and the backing for the Cat quilt is amazing...... so dramatic, so much for a child to look at and enjoy. Well done, you have achieved a lot this week in spite of the pesky sewing machine. Hope your Quilt Group meeting went well, that you did lots of sewing and came home with loads of scraps and strips ready to make more Kid Quilts.

  5. I'm glad your machine finally decided to cooperate. That sailboat quilt does look adorable, despite the quilting difficulties. I need to quit blog reading and go sew, Maybe turning on the iron will warm me up. It got down to 9 below last night.

  7. Hurray for finishing up those cute sailboats. Sometimes the machines just get temperamental, don't they? I say make the ribbons quilt. There will always be more red scraps coming to make something for someone else! Love the elephants, too. Have a fun sew day!

  9. Your Saturday posts are always so fun because you have lots to share! Love the Quilts for Kids, and glad you were able to get the sailboat quilt finished up. The Ribbons quilt is so pretty - it should definitely be a priority! How do you figure the size needed for the setting triangles? I have got to learn how to do that if I'm ever going to set blocks on point - like the chandelier blocks!

  11. Of course you’re going to do it all. Glad to hear your sewing machine is behaving better. And ahem, the cat fabric was not for Quilts for Kids…it was for Quilts for Cats.

  12. Love your boat quilt. Sorry it was such a pain to quilt for no apparent reasons. The "cat" quilt is cool, even if the Nineties threw up on it (you crack me up!). I'm so in love with the back fabric. Great piece. Love your SHARR quilt colours. It will be interesting to see it grow. Have fun! ;^)

  14. You constantly amaze me! I sit and look at my scraps and you just get busy and sew! I wonder why your machine had difficulty with the sailboats? It’s a puzzle! Glad that it’s now purring along. I’m sure your Saturday workshop was great fun! I have a 2 day sew-day this coming week! I’m sure there will be no masks, except on my face! I’ll only go for one day, cause we have dr appt on Wednesday. Striving to be like Cathy, in my sewing room this week! Ps: I vote for the Ribbon quilt!

  16. Hi Cathy! I just adore your sailboat quilt!! What a great finish. And your SAHRR piece is coming along nicely. Your center block rocks (I picked a star to build upon, as well). {{Hugs}} a bunch. ~smile~ Roseanne

  17. You have so many quilts going. Love the finishes especially the boats; I like that block design. Although the red one is awesome as well. All the different blocks make it work together. Good luck on the SAHRR. I can't wait to see what Monday brings. time4stitchn

  18. That cat fabric on the backing is fun and quite unusual. The sailboat quilt is a great finish even though your machine wasn't happy with it. Methinks my machine is destined for a spa trip at some point before too long despite my best efforts to clean it myself.

  19. Such fabulous cat fabric on the back of that quilt, wild indeed! Your sail boat quilt looks great, I'm pleased your machine problems seem to be over. My own RSC boat quilt is stalled in calm seas, we are away for the next three weeks on a caravan trip.
