Victorian Ladies Round Robin

This round robin finished a few months ago, but I am just now getting around to posting the pictures.  

The blocks I sent out all contained a silk image of a Victorian woman in some activity - walking, reading, playing piano, etc.   The ladies were each given a piece of vintage lace and the silkie with the block and told they could place them as they preferred.  What lovely blocks I got back!  Five of the six were completed, with the sixth one waiting for me to complete it.  I plan to do a wall hanging for our bedroom.

I asked for low volume color - nothing too dark or loud - as my bedroom is in shades of cream and gold.

So that catches me up on completed round robins as far as blogging goes.  I have current RRs and some Angel work that I did, plus I hope to finish up my CQ Journal Project piece before the turn of the NEXT century.  Ha!

Also, I have given my new stitching studio a test drive, and I LOVE it.  I still have some shelves to organize before I take pictures, but I hope to do that this coming week.  Next couple days are devoted to getting out some custom orders for my Etsy shop.

But I will leave you with a picture of Darla and Alfie - doing what they do best; resting.  Of course, they are also amazing at running and playing, cuddling, eating, pooping, and thundering through the house at 3 a.m.  What would we do without our furkids?

Victorian Women RR - Lisa’s Block

I am having a surprising amount of fun and enjoyment with this round robin!   Victorian is such a fun theme to do, with the frills and flowers and such. Oh, and lace of course. 

Lisa did all her blocks in pastels, and I selected this one to work on.

First I trimmed the center silk print with vintage tatting and a gold trim. Then I decided we needed lace in the top area.  :-)  And of course, flowers to coordinate with and echo the other colors in the block; pink roses and yellow whateverflowers.

Then I added some fancy seam stitching, a lace fan, some beads and called it done.  :-) Lisa, I hope you like it!

And this is off in the mail to Hideko in Japan. Just squeezed in the mailing before we halt for the crazy mail month of December.  But that`s alright; it’s not like I don’t have anything to work on!!

Another Victorian Lady Block

I finished my block for Connie in our Victorian Ladies round robin for Crazy Quilting International. The pictures are of Connie’s female ancestors. When I was stitching on this block, I looked up her name and it was Helena. So appropriate, because it was my late mother’s name!

After I mailed it off to the next person in the rotation, I remembered that I had intended to add a little spider and web, a Victorian symbol of good luck.

The block was wedge-shaped, and will be one of six made into a circle when complete. What a lovely idea!

I am nearing completion on another non-sewing, non-stitching project.  I am totally redo-ing a little footstool that I purchased a couple years ago at the thrift store.  Now that my living room is together and Boomer’s my new chair is in place, I really wanted to get the footstool done.  It’s already been taken apart and painted. The fabric is selected and interfaced, the foam is cut. But. The base of the lid had some rotten parts. Oy. So Bruce is out getting a little piece of chipboard to replace it.  About five years ago we recovered our patio chairs (wrought iron ice cream chairs) and replaced all the chipboard seats before recovering them. I though we still had lots of chipboard left over, but *someone* has been using it, bit by bit, in his laboratory. That’s OK, it keeps him out of trouble!

Victorian Ladies and Snowballs

In the Crazy Quilting International group, we are still trading Snowballs.  Snowballs are mini works that friends trade with each other (similar to ATCs, or Artist Trading Cards). My request was for 4” circles in bright colors. This is what my friend Rita in Kansas made for me:

And in turn, Rita requested a hexagon in pink, cream and green with a butterfly or dragonfly. This is what I made for her:

I am also participating in a Victorian Ladies DYB (Do Your Own Block) round robin.   My first block was one of Gerry H’s.  She sent six blocks; each participant choses one block (6x6” square) to decorate, then passes them all to the next person in the rotation.  When the blocks return to their owner, five of six are complete.

Anyway, Gerry had some lovely images, and I selected the lady in purple. The embellishments include vintage tatting surrounding the central image, a stumpwork (3-D) parasol and purse, a fan, some stitching and silk ribbon work. I attempted to repeat her fabric colors (all her blocks use the same colors) in the embellishments. This was a really fun block to work on.

Victorian Ladies Round Robin Blocks

I am participating in a Round Robin (RR) called Victorian Ladies with the Crazy Quilting International Yahoo group.  This type of RR is called a Do Your Own Block or DYB. Each of the six participants pieces 6 crazy quilt blocks and sends them out in the rotation. When you get someone’s set of blocks, you pick one (they are only 6x6”) and embellish the entire thing; stitching, beads, silk ribbon, or whatever.

Here are my six “naked” blocks. I chose to print out vintage images on silk of Victorian women in different activities; reading, sewing, playing the piano, etc. The silk prints are just pinned on, because each stitcher will determine where on the block to place it. In most cases, the antique lace has not been sewn on either, and the stitchers can also determine where to put that.

The blocks are intended to be very low-color as they will be made into a small wall hanging in our neutral toned bedroom.

I thought I had taken pictures of my CQ Journal Project block for July and posted it, but I could not even find any pictures on my computer.  I guess that is for the next post.

Tomorrow we are having a birthday party for DGD London, who will be three on Friday. But because of scheduling conflicts, the family party is tomorrow night here at our house. I am baking her a Winnie the Pooh birthday cake and today we went to Ikea and bought her an easel with a blackboard on one side and a whiteboard on the other. Plus markers, erasers, chalk, etc.  I can’t wait!!
