I started the Rainbow Scrap green month of January working on my selvages. My plan was to make some wonky selvage log cabin blocks, and I showed one of those last week. I ended up sewing 8 of them at 6.5” each, but they took absolutely forever. And my selvages looked like they hadn’t been touched. Oy.
I would’ve had to make 2,354 log cabin blocks (that may be a *slight* exaggeration) to use up my selvages. So, I switched to Plan B. Perhaps using one of my Accuquilt dies like last year, when I did tumblers, would be the ticket. So, I tried some circles.
Nah..... What the heck am I going to do with a bunch of circles besides appliqué them to blocks. And I don’t like appliqué. Plus they didn’t use any selvages to speak of, so Plan B was a bust. Those circles have made some new friends, however, in the scrappy block orphanage. On to Plan C.
Now we’re talkin’! These are half hexagons that measure 4.5” across the top and 8.5” across the bottom. Lots of straight sewing and cutting, and a super selvage eater!! They will be sewn in rows either vertically or horizontally (no inset seams), so there’s lots of potential here. That left me with just some smaller selvages, which necessitated Plan D.
Columns of 4” wide selvages. These can be added in to an orphan block quilt down the road, or whatever. Again, lots of possibilities. And that finished off all my green selvages, at least for 10 minutes or so... which brought me to the firm decision that this is the LAST year I’m going to sew selvages. I have to tell my friends at Quilts for Kids (who save them for me) to stop. There are just too many and I don’t want to spend a week every month sewing selvages together. I’d rather be digging into my fabric stash and making a major dent in it.
So, I’ll continue just this year with my selvages every month; 8 log cabins, lots of half hexies, and then the rest in 4-inch columns. What I accumulate (inevitably) between now and the end of October, along with what doesn’t get used, will go to some
So finally I got to sew with fabric instead of selvages. What a concept! First thing I made were these 8 Twin Sisters blocks, which measure 6.5” unfinished.
And then I made a 16” block called Scraptastic Stars, which is a pattern from Melissa Corey at Happy Quilting. I have to confess, however, that I didn’t buy a pattern because it’s so basic - I just figured it out and sewed it on my own. I’ll make one of these blocks for 9 months, and that’ll be large enough for a kid’s quilt.
After all that green, I needed a break. So, I finished sewing the blocks together for this Little Orphan Scrappy quilt. Can I say how much I love this? It measures 42x50”. I’ve also cut the backing for it, so now it’s ready to be basted. Quilting will have to wait until my regular machine returns from the spa.
About that time, another Squirrel project scampered across my path. One of the shelves in one of my fabric storage bookcases came loose and fell off its supports (it has been fixed). But I had to take all the fabric off the shelf and
It took less than 90 minutes from start to completed top. And I had a blue fabric that will work for the back and some that will work for the binding. Bam! (I love saying that, you may have noticed that recently). So that is the second quilt in line to be basted and quilted. It measures 39x51”.
Cousin Kim and friend Bonnae came over on Wednesday for sewing and we’ve all decided to sew on some Farm Girl Vintage blocks together. Bonnae started the house block and I started the hand mixer block. Kim hasn’t quite decided where to start yet, although she wants to do the animals, truck, barn, flag and a few others. She wants it all in her head and planned out before she starts. I get it.
Have a good week, friends! I’m linking up to Scrappy Saturday at Angela’s blog.

Lovely greens--I am not a fan of my acid-ey greens...I like your selvages--you have a lot of them!! Nice works hugs, Julierose
I have a couple of selvage UFOs and then I think I'm done with them too. They take me so long to sew together and sometimes I miss actually sewing them together in a few spots.
Twin Sisters and Scraptastic Stars are wonderful new additions to the RSC line up.
And what a wonderfully scrappy and colorful little orphan block quilt. Congrats on getting that one together.
I really like the half hexagons for your selvages, Cathy! (No, I'm not volunteering to take any off your hands!) The Scraptastic Stars are a great block, too. Your orphan block quilt turned out beautifully - I like the way you balanced the different blocks you had throughout the quilt!
Cathy you had me chuckling so many times reading this post.
I’m really wanting to make some scraptastic stars for RSC20 this year. Looking at your Little Orphan scrappy quilt reminded me that I also wanted to try Geese Migration Blocks! My sewing time may be limited for a bit, due to the influx of people in our house. I’m trying to get my OMG done!
Good morning, Cathy! What a fun, newsy post with lots of sewing happening. I have never, ever sewn with or even saved selvages. I do have one in my drawer - it was tied around a bundle of fabrics. Just for fun, I am going to save them because I want to make a bookcase quilt and I think they would look cool as a few book titles or spines of the books. I can't imagine that I would ever have enough to do something cool with them, but I do love your half hexagon blocks. That will be a unique take on the challenge at the end of the year! I have missed posts, I suspect - but have been thinking about the two of you and hope all is well. Yes, homage to Royalty is required and it is duly noted. Good job! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
Looks like you had some BIG fun in the sewing room! You did a good job on working through some of you GREEN scrap. I have to tell you, though, my favorites are those sweet selvage circles!!! Sigh...
You got some serious stitching done this week! I'm especially impressed with your selvage efforts. I'm stymied on selvages; I love the look of selvage projects, but nothing is calling my name right now.
I love Little Orphan Scrappy, too! And I'm glad to see that the half hexies will solve a big chunk of the selvage tsunami. I admit I toss the darn things out myself :)
Hmmm - methinks you should be taking your selvages and making that poor bed-less kitty something other than the hard floor to sleep on. And....those circles could perhaps play a role on the back of a quilt? That way you could use them without having to add to them.
You've made a good start on RSC and two flimsies to add to the quilt pile. We're in FL now and while I brought a machine and some things to work on, I ran out of time to collect any greens to bring along. I don't think I want to start any new RSC blocks until I finish up some of the ongoing ones. I do like the Scraptastic Stars so that might go on the someday list.

There is never a dull moment in your studio, Cathy. I was with you in the entire journey - selvages to squirrels. I love the Twin Sister blocks and the secondary pinwheel the design makes when the blocks are put together. I'd happily take the 4" selvage blocks off your hands :-) In my opinion they will make a scrumptious rail fence quilt.
You definitely attacked those green selvage scraps and you've got some fun RSC projects for this year. That orphan block quilt is so bright and fun, you'd never guess that it was from orphans, it has that modern quilt vibe. Happy stitching this week.
