I met with my surgeon this week and “graduated” at my final post-op checkup. They award “graduates” with a bag of candy. But the best part is that I can now swim!! I still have three weeks of physical therapy twice per week, (plus I add an additional session of my own). I can now bend my leg to a 130-degree angle and straighten it completely, (180 degrees). Beyond that, we’re putting together an exercise program that will help me strengthen my core, maintain flexibility and balance and keep me mobile. I’m looking forward to it!
In sewing, I finally buckled down and finished putting this scrappy top together. I’ve also prepared a backing and hung it in the closet for Ruby to quilt when its turn comes up.
Have a great week everyone!
Ruby did bring back this Tabby Road Strippy we worked on, and I bound it and finished it.
The pictures don’t do justice to the colors, but it is softer (less glaring) than it appears. Here’s a closeup.
Ruby quilted it with kitties playing with a ball of yard. You can see it on the backing better.
We have our monthly Quilts for Kids workshop today (Saturday) and I have something like 7-8 little finished quilts to bring them. That feels good.
I’ve worked on this blue scrappy quilt quite a bit this week. It’s going to end up at approximately 48x60”.
All I need to finish are the final five 10” Plus Blocks on the left, which I’ll do at Quilts for Kids (QFK) today. Everything else is pinned up, although I didn’t pin them below the design board; the rest of the blocks for each column are pinned at the bottom. I’ll begin sewing columns this weekend.
I’ve also picked out a lot of blue chunks and width-of-fabric strips that I’m going to sew into a backing for this quilt, rather like a giant crumb block. :-). That pretty much will conclude my blue sewing for July’s Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I wonder whether Angela will assign for July?
Also, two more sets of 15 string blocks got sewn this week. I have a total of 9 sets of blocks that I’m turning in for kits at QFK today; 4 sets of blue strings and 5 sets of multi-colored strings. That’s 135 string blocks sewn since my surgery. Not bad!
Alfalfa (orange) and Darla (brown) love to lay in the morning sun. They were a little apprehensive when we changed out the wood blinds for shutters, but they’ve gotten used to the slatted sun and moving panels. We’re not going to tell them that the flooring and fireplace makeover are next on the agenda!
They just celebrated their 13th birthday last month. We’re very lucky that they’ve been very healthy kitties. Now, if we could only find a solution to hairballs!

Congratulations on the stellar knee recovery and getting back to the pool! I like your blue mishmash of blocks projects. Scaps . .. little bits of this and than can turn into such jewels!
ReplyDeleteYep, the knee recovery is surprising me. But I think the warmer summer months are always easier on my joints than the cold winter months. I’m at the age (and having arthritis) that I dread winter.
DeleteThose are great news, Cathy. So happy that all is going well with the healing. I love the scrappy top (Of course, I do! lol), and the blue one is coming up AMAzing! You sure showed those strings who's the boss! Lol. Enjoy! ;^)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chantal. I probably could have sewn another 45-60 string blocks in blue, but enough is enough (for now). Aqua is calling, but I haven’t done anything yet this week except sorting. Where does the time go?
DeleteLove all your quilts--that 1st scrappy top (with rectangle strips) is so neat--love that idea...Happy to hear your knee is coming along so well, Cathy. Hang in there!! ;)))
ReplyDeleteHugs, Julierose
Thanks, Julierose! I’ve got so many 2.5” width scraps, I’ll be sewing them into the next millennium!
Deleteglad your knee is healed and PT is helping - that is great for you
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen. This knee started off feeling worse than the first one after surgery, but once I hit the 3rd week post-op, progress has been really quick and easy. IM so grateful!
DeleteHairballs arent a problem for the cats, just a problem for the owner sho has to clean the up!
ReplyDeleteThat’s right. And they always choose carpets and rugs over easy-to-clean floors!
DeleteSounds like you're doing great with your knee rehab, Cathy! I love that fun scrappy quilt top in the first photo. What size strips did you use for that? Happy Birthday to Alfie and Darla!
ReplyDeleteHi Diann! The size of the long strips are 2.5x8.5”. Then a pair is capped with a 2.5x4.5” “potato chip”. I just flipped the orientation of each column. I still have lots of the 2x8 strips, so the next one I’ll sew up with three long bars capped with a 4.5x6.5” cap (in white). It’s just playing with the easiest was to use it all up!!
DeleteA finished top, a completed quilt and a lovely collection of block for a future project. Knowing you, it will soon be a quilt top, too, Cathy! So glad to hear that your post-surgical journey has brought increased mobility.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joy! Yep, my mobility is good enough that no one but me notices anything. I still have strength-building to do so I can carry heavy groceries up the couple steps into the house without thinking about it. But I’ll get there. I hope all is well with you! xo
DeleteOh gosh, I used to be the enabler when I'd visit my folks ("What project do you want me to help you finish?"). Now, after wrecking my back for three days just trying to shampoo the livingroom carpet (speaking of cats), I've become the enablee! This aging business sucks.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn
So true! My hubby Bruce only has one arm (2020 amputation due to soft tissue sarcoma) and I’m still too gimpy to climb a ladder to reach to and store things on high shelves. So my oldest son did it. He’s tall and didn’t need a ladder to reach! Hey, I figure its all the circle of life business and old age has it’s privileges!
DeleteGood to hear you graduated and can now get in the pool! I’m looking forward to seeing the blue scrappy quilt all ready to put backing on. I’ll have to live vicariously through you and the other scrap happy sewers. I haven’t tried sitting at the machine yet. Maybe this week after my check up with the orthopedist.
ReplyDeleteI’m hoping to find some serious sewing time on Friday (Thursday is already filled with other stuff). I know I’ll have some time over the weekend, but I need something to show on Scrappy Saturday! We both just have to sometimes put our health and other things first. HAve a great holiday weekend!
DeleteCongrats on graduating & being allowed in the pool. That's good exercise, post-op or not. So happy that your knee is coming along great. And so many strings done! Yay!!
ReplyDeleteYep, I’m now allowed in the pool, but I’ve been so busy that I haven’t gone. Bruce doesn’t want to swim anymore, so I have to go on my own when I can find a free morning (after PT is over) or a free afternoon (even harder to come by!). Maybe over the Holidays in July!
DeleteGreat progress with PT! And great progress with your quilting -- I like the jumble of blues and also the first (strips and bricks).
ReplyDeleteI’m probably just like so many other quilters - it’s fun to have several things going at once. So if I’m not in the mood to work on a particular thing, there’s always something else. Unfortunately, after a quilt is designed and the blocks sewn, my least favorite part is assembling the quilt top. Especially on-point settings and sashing with cornerstones. But we can’t get to the finish line without those parts, so I try not to put it off TOO long, lol.
