Scrappy Salad Greens!

The weather here in Salt Lake is crazy. Ask anyone attending Spring Quilt Market. We have had nice mornings, then it gets windy and rainy (and thunder-y and lightning-ish, complete with power failures for downtown).  I did manage several hours outdoors one afternoon this week to get some of my bright Mexican Talavera flower pots planted.  I have 13 and got 4 done. About 7-8 total will go along the front walkway and the rest in the backyard and on the patio. I don’t have pictures yet of this year, but you can see a pic from a previous year below. I had 2 friends call me earlier in the week to see if I was OK because my pots weren’t out yet, so I had to hurry and get some out!  :-)

From greenery to green scraps..... I have been sewing like a lunatic trooper this week. So let’s get to it.  First up are my 16-patches. The patches are 2” when sewn; the blocks will finish at 8”. There are 10 of them, which is exactly how many I have done with each color so far this year.

Next up are 2 of the three Dresdens. I have a 3rd one, not shown, on a baby blue background. I still have no clue what I am doing with these. When we are done with the rainbow, I’ll cut them all down to a uniform size, probably about 19.5” unfinished. With these green ones, my total so far is 11. I think there will easily be enough for 2 quilts when all the colors are done.

not crazy about these doilies, but they will stay....
I had a change of Supervisor this week. Darla (who is Alfie’s sister and the only sane one of the pair) kept me company and on task. Alfie would drop by now and then, but mostly he just wanted a good scratch.

Darla checks my seams and also the comfort of the fabric.
Thanks to Darla’s help, I was able to churn out 25..... yep, 25 improv blocks from my scraps and crumbs and leftover HSTs. I have to say how much I enjoy doing these blocks!, which measure 8.5” each (8” finished).

I still have green scraps, but most of them are larger chunks.  And I can easily close their drawer now, with room to refill it for next year, LOL!

I’m planning to post again mid-week with an update on my (abbreviated) Splendid Sampler. I will also snap a pic of the green Dresden on blue.  Next weekend I will be in Seattle. I will prepare my post as usual on Friday night, but won`t have a live link to the RSC until later Saturday evening.

And now I’m off to check out all the great green gobs of..... (oops, wrong song....) the great scrappy projects over at Scrappy Saturday. Why not join us??

  2. I can't imagine how big your green scrap drawer is, if you can barely close it after removing so much this week! I love your improvised blocks; a great idea!

  3. Hmmm.... Lovely green scrappy projects. You have been very busy creating all of this. I like the dresdens with the doily center. It sweet and vintage looking. Also - all of the improv blocks are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
We (in Nor Calif.) have had crazy weather this week also. We had warm days up to 88* at the beginning of the week and then yesterday it dropped to the 40's with thunder and hail and rain. May 20th???

  6. first of all may I say Darla is my favorite name, and her eyes are the color of your scraps. Second I used to live in SLC. One summer while applying and waiting for my Canadian visa I stayed with my sister just outside the city. What a fun summer that was running in the big center park daily, visiting sundance for concerts touring around the best of national parks. LeeAnna

  9. In Colorado it has finally stopped snowing and warmed up, so I could plant flowers this week. That makes it finally feel like spring! Your pots look beautiful! It made me laugh when you said the neighbors called to make sure you were okay! Fun green sewing this week, and glad to know you are not doing it unsupervised!

  11. Your green improv blocks are awesome. We've had so much rain my squash and cucumbers have turned such a sickly yellow I bought replacements. And I envy your having a sane assistant.

  13. I saw this picture in my blog roll and didn't EVEN have to wonder who posted. I'd recognize those glorious Mexican pots anywhere!!

You HAVE been busy. And Alfie has a SISTER!! Lots of cat antics going on at YOUR house!!

Well, let me tell you, I am taking Kathy Shaw's on line traditional quilting class. Just started it, but I am sure I am NOT going to piece any blocks that call for 45 pieces either.

For a change we are having really beautiful weather with 80's in the forecast. Love it!!
    xx, Carol

  14. I give up - I now know beyond a doubt that your days have more hours in them than mine will ever have. Like the greens, but even better is that sweet kittie boss!
