It's clear you won't be lifting them. Can you get the carpet guys to move them back? Love the windmill quilts. I made one disappearing nine patch and didn't enjoy the process. It was an I Spy variation which was fiddly to construct and my OCD was unhappy when the cut pieces didn't come out the right size. Sometimes you just have to concede a technique is not right for you.
