Halloween and Christmas in the Same Week

Welcome to another weekend! My goal today, if the weather cooperates and the rain holds off (80% chance of rain), is to winterize the courtyard - store or cover all the furniture, dig up the remaining annuals, and blow out the leaves. Once that’s done, the day is mine! Or if it does rain, the day is mine anyway so I can read or sew and the yard work can wait until Monday.

This past week I was a sewing demon! I decided to make all the Christmas fabrics and strings I recently sorted out just go away. And of course, by “go away” I mean sew them into string blocks. And that’s precisely what I did. I sewed and sewed until they were all gone except a small number. As I was nearing the end of them, I decided to pull out any that were non-Christmas (or could pass as such, like solids and plaids) and add them back into my regular scrap stash. In the end, I sewed 59 more blocks (6” finished). When added to the 4 test blocks I made last week, they totaled 63 blocks. They will eventually (maybe later this year, maybe next year) be sewn into a little Christmas quilt that will measure 42x54”.

These are just pinned up on the design wall for proof of life! They’ll be taken down and stored away for later. That brings my total of string blocks sewn into September and October to 273. My goal is to reach 600 by the end of the year. My pace is steady. Next week I’ll go back to the multi-colored strings.

Some string blocks up close

The real excitement for me in the sewing room this week was to finally finish up the Halloween quilt I started in January. I needed to make 16 blocks to surround the center panel, so I sewed two per month through August. In September I assembled the quilt blocks and panel into a top, pin basted it and began quilting. This week I finally finished the quilting and binding, and it’s now done and ready to use.

I ran outside to photograph it as the light was quickly fading. The final quilt measures 50x72”.

These backing is (mostly) a print from Janet Wecker Frisch.

I didn’t get any photos of the quilting I did on the squares, but that’s something I may do in the next week.

My next week sewing goals are to quilt three small kid quilts, web another couple sets of Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks, and sew 30-45 string blocks.

That wraps things up for now. Next week I have a couple quick meetings, a luncheon, a doctor appointment to drive Bruce to - and the rest is fun time. I plan to make the most of it!

Linking to Scrappy Saturday for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

  1. I really love your Christmas string blocks piece, Cathy; so many wonderful fabrics to catch your eye...nice work...and your Halloween quilt came out beautifully...;)))
I am at a standstill right now with my next page for my fabric booklet...can't seem to come up with anything--time out for a bit...
We got our flu shots yesterday and a bit under the weather today--but not bad...hope your weekend is a good one hugs, Julierose

    1. Thanks so much, Julierose. I’ve been enjoying my Halloween quilt immensely! We got our flu and Covid shots yesterday and both Bruce and I had zero reaction to the shots. In fact, I had totally forgotten about them until one of my friends playfully (gently) punched me on the left arm today and I felt a slight ache from the injection site.

  2. Congratulations on the Halloween finish! I like the density of all the Christmas prints. Hope the weekend and the week ahead are happy and productive.

    1. Thanks, Nann. I tried to select blocks for the quilt based on color density and intriguing (to me) patterns, some of which I had to draft myself. I’m not a big fan of quilts with a lot of negative space (just a personal preference).

  3. I love it when a goal is set, and MET!! Congrats on the new Hallowe'en quilt!

I'm using up scads of Christmas scraps too, but mine are turning into five chain garlands (each 10 feet long, at least). I've devoted October to getting them done. One down and all the prep work already done for the remaining four, so it's just a matter of stitching each strip closed, building a chain link by link. A blog post will be written about this project, soon.

  4. Congrats on following through on your plan for the Halloween quilt. It turned out great! Every year I think I'm going to make a Christmas quilt.....and then I don't do it. I guess it isn't at the top of my priority list.

    1. I have a Christmas quilt already, and so does my granddaughter London. Poor girl. She got the very first quilt I tried FMQ on. It was a Christmas jelly roll race with a minky backing (what was I thinking?) and I cringe every time I see it. But she loves it still and I have to admit I sure learned a lot!!

  5. Congratulations on finishing the Halloween quilt (it looks great) and doing the outdoor cleanup. I have too much outdoors stuff to ever get done, but I've been busy digging up and tossing out plants that the deer repeatedly demolish. I hope to reduce the amount of garden space because I just can't keep up with it and the wildlife and weather are wrecking havoc with what's left.

    1. I can sure relate to not being able to keep up with the yardwork - hence our move from the house to a condo last year. Our courtyard has nice border areas and a good-sized patio area, and it’s just perfect for me to handle. I hope I can still say that in my eighties, but I’ve got a decade to not worry about it until then!

  6. Oh, my! The Halloween quilt came out SO cute! Love it! I picked mine up from the quilter yesterday, so will sew on the binding today & get hand-sewing it down this week. Yay! And the Christmas strings are absolutely stunning. Just a lovely tapestry of red & green.

    1. Thanks, Sue. I’m so pleased with how the quilt turned out. This one I’m keeping for me and the kids can argue over it when I’m gone. :-)

  7. You are a string block rockstar! Can’t wait to see the Christmas ones all done up. A goal of 600. Wow! Are they all the same size?

    1. Rockstar? Haha, thank you. I call myself a Stringing Fool! But I love them and know I’m in good company! Yes, I do my string blocks in 6.5” unfinished (6” finished) size. Quilts for Kids (our local Salt Lake City group) uses them in that size to put into kits for members to sew up into quilts with other fabrics. I just did my Christmas strings in the same size out of habit.

    1. Well, we’ll see how my pace holds up. Not to mention my string supply! But I might as well set a pie-in-the-sky goal and try hard to meet it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

  9. Congrats on sewing up all those Christmas strings, Cathy, and on finishing up your Halloween quilt, too!

    1. Thanks, Joy. This time of year, with autumn here and weather turning colder just seems to provide more time and energy for me to focus on sewing! And finishing up yearly quilting goals. xo
